Have you noticed a foul odor coming from your couch recently? Cushions and thick material that cover sofas and couches easily trap the scents of odor-causing liquids. While the stain may be removed with little to no effort, it may be harder to remove the scent that was left behind. Here are some ways you can act fast after a spill so your furniture doesn't develop a sour smell.

  1. Remove the source of the smell. As soon as a spill dries, the odor begins. No matter what type of spill it is, drench the area in water to reactivate the source of the scent. This will help you get rid of the source and excess moisture. Use clean cold water to saturate; hot water can set the stain, so don't use this. Wait five minutes, and then vacuum the area with a wet-dry vacuum. Allow the area to dry, and then smell the area. If you still smell something sour, repeat the process until the area of the couch is mostly odor-free when dry. If needed, you can use an upholstery shampoo that is enzyme based or odor eliminating.
  2. Neutralize the scent. Items such as baking soda or charcoal activated carpet powder will help freshen the upholstery of the couch by breaking down sour smells rather than coating it in fragrance. Sprinkle some of the product onto the couch and allow it to sit on the area for one hour. Mist it with water immediately after application and allow the area to dry. Vacuum thoroughly with a bristle attachment once the area is completely dry.
  3. Deodorize if your couch is made of leather. Leather furniture shouldn't be drenched in water, so you will need to use a different process to remove smells from this type of furniture. Mix Castile soap with a bucket of warm water; not too much, just enough for soap suds to form. Dip a soft rag into the mixture and wring excess water out of the rag. Wipe a small portion of the sofa down with the rag and use a clean wet rag to remove soap residue. Wipe down a third time with a dry rag. Repeat the process on any other areas of the couch that have an odor. Once the area is dry, sprinkle some baking soda and allow it to sit for 4-6 hours. Vacuum to remove the baking soda.
  4. Call a professional cleaning company. If you have tried these options and none of them work for your furniture, call your local upholstery cleaning company.
